Fire Safety Training and Fire Drill

Fire safety training and fire drills help employees understand fire risks, the principles of evacuation and the correct actions to take in the event of a fire. Well-prepared people can act faster and with more confidence in an emergency.

Tondi Tulekaitse organises fire safety training and fire drills for companies and institutions that need to comply with fire safety requirements and ensure employee preparedness.

Who is required to organise a fire drill?

Institutions and companies that are required to submit a fire safety self-inspection report must organise a fire drill once a year.

If several companies or institutions operate in the same building, the fire drill must be carried out jointly to ensure coordinated action in the event of a fire.

What is the purpose of a fire drill?

The purpose of a fire drill is to ensure knowledge and skills for evacuation and action in the event of a fire. During the drill, the following is assessed:

  • whether the fire emergency action plan fulfils its purpose;

  • whether employees know how to act correctly in the event of a fire;

  • how the evacuation procedure works;

  • which parts of the fire safety arrangements need clarification or improvement.

What do the training and drill include?

A fire drill consists of a theoretical and a practical part.

Theoretical part

The theoretical part covers, among other things:

  • the nature and development of fire;

  • the dangers of fire to people, property and the environment;

  • possible causes of fire;

  • basic rules and safety principles for extinguishing a fire;

  • principles of safe evacuation;

  • following evacuation routes and evacuation markings;

  • principles of using a fire alarm system;

  • reporting a fire to the Emergency Response Centre;

  • the use of primary fire extinguishing equipment and fire safety installations.

Practical part

The practical part consists of simulating a fire situation and practising practical actions to the extent possible. Its purpose is to check whether theoretical knowledge also works in a real-life situation.

Summary of the drill

A written summary of the fire drill is prepared within one calendar month after the drill. The summary covers factual information related to the drill, identified circumstances, achievement of objectives and, if necessary, proposals for changing or improving the fire safety arrangements.

Legal basis

According to Regulation No. 43 of the Minister of the Interior of 01.09.2010, ā€œRequirements for Fire Emergency Action Plans and for the Organisation of Evacuation and Fire Drillsā€, the purpose of a fire drill is to ensure knowledge and skills for evacuation and action in the event of a fire, and to determine whether the plan fulfils its purpose and whether employees know how to act correctly in the event of a fire.
