Hose Reel System Inspection and Maintenance

A hose reel system is a powerful first-aid firefighting tool that must be ready for immediate use. Ensuring that the system is in proper working order and properly maintained is the responsibility of the property owner.

Tondi Tulekaitse provides hose reel system inspection and maintenance services to ensure that the system is ready for use, properly marked and quickly available when needed.

How often should a hose reel system be inspected?

Firefighting water supply systems and hose reel systems must be visually checked, inspected and maintained regularly. The general frequency is:

  • visual check: once every quarter;

  • inspection: once a year, in accordance with the EVS-EN 671 series of standards and the manufacturer’s instructions;

  • maintenance: according to the results of the inspection;

  • hose pressure test: at maximum working pressure every five years.

What is assessed during a hose reel system inspection?

A hose reel system inspection helps ensure that the system is visible, accessible and in proper working order. During the inspection, the following aspects are assessed, among others:

  • whether the hose reel system is ready for use;

  • whether the system is visible and accessible;

  • whether the operating instructions are available and legible;

  • whether the system has any visible defects;

  • whether there are signs of corrosion or leaks;

  • whether the water delivery capacity is sufficient;

  • whether the hoses require pressure testing or maintenance.

Why is regular maintenance important?

A hose reel system must work immediately when it is needed. If the system is damaged, leaking, difficult to access or has not been maintained, using it in the event of a fire may be difficult or even impossible.

Regular inspection and maintenance help ensure that the hose reel system complies with the requirements and is ready for use at a critical moment.

Legal basis

The inspection and maintenance of hose reel systems are carried out in accordance with the regulation “Requirements for Fire Extinguishers and Hose Systems, Their Selection, Installation, Marking and Maintenance”, the EVS-EN 671 series of standards and the manufacturer’s instructions for the components of the hose reel system.

Hose reel system visual check

The owner must visually check the condition of the hose reel system once every quarter. The visual check includes actions to ensure that the hose reel system:

  • is ready for use;

  • is visible;

  • has operating instructions;

  • is accessible without obstruction;

  • has no visible defects;

  • is not damaged by corrosion or leaks.

If any deficiencies are found during the visual check, measures must be taken to eliminate them.

Hose reel system inspection and maintenance

The inspection and maintenance of a hose reel system must be carried out in accordance with the EVS-EN 671 series of standards and the manufacturer’s instructions for the components of the hose reel system.

The hose reel system and its water delivery capacity must be tested if the results of the visual check require it, but not less frequently than once a year.

The hose reel system must be maintained according to the results of the inspection. Hoses must be pressure tested at maximum working pressure every five years.

Record keeping

The person who inspects and maintains the hose reel system must keep records of the inspection and maintenance activities for at least five years after the inspection and maintenance have been carried out.
