Gas Extinguishing System

A gas extinguishing system is used in rooms where a fire or damage caused by water-based extinguishing could lead to major losses, the destruction of valuable assets or the interruption of a critical process.

Tondi Tulekaitse provides the design, installation and maintenance of gas extinguishing systems for critical buildings and rooms.

Where is a gas extinguishing system suitable?

A gas extinguishing system is suitable for areas where conventional extinguishing methods may cause additional damage or where equipment, data, documents or other valuable assets need to be protected.

Typical applications include:

  • server and telecommunications rooms;

  • electrical switchboard rooms;

  • archives;

  • museums;

  • vaults;

  • control and technical rooms;

  • other critical buildings and rooms.

How does a gas extinguishing system work?

A gas extinguishing system extinguishes fire without water. In the event of a fire, the system releases extinguishing gas into the protected room, stopping combustion either by reducing the oxygen level or by interrupting the chemical chain reaction of the fire.

There are two main types of gas extinguishing systems:

  • Inert gas systems, which use gases such as argon, nitrogen or mixtures of these gases. Their extinguishing effect is based on reducing the oxygen level needed for combustion in the protected room. In the event of a fire, inert gas is released into the room and part of the air in the room, including oxygen, is replaced with inert gas. When the oxygen concentration drops sufficiently, the fire is extinguished.

  • Chemical gas systems, which use extinguishing agents such as FK-5-1-12, also known as Novec 1230, or HFC227ea, also known as FM-200. Chemical extinguishing gases have a high heat absorption capacity. When released into the room, the gas interrupts the combustion chain reaction and absorbs enough energy from the fire to extinguish it.

Why choose a gas extinguishing system?

A gas extinguishing system is a suitable solution when it is important to:

  • detect and extinguish a fire quickly;

  • avoid water damage;

  • protect electronics, documents, archives or museum collections;

  • reduce the risk of business interruption or process shutdown;

  • protect rooms where conventional extinguishing could cause greater damage.

Extinguishing systems based on inert and chemical gases are safe for people and the environment at the extinguishing concentration.

Gas extinguishing system design, installation and maintenance

A gas extinguishing system must be selected and designed according to the specific characteristics, risks and purpose of use of the protected room. The reliability of the system depends on the right solution, proper installation and regular maintenance.

Tondi Tulekaitse provides the design, installation and maintenance of gas extinguishing systems.

A gas extinguishing system must be maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, but not less frequently than once every quarter. Regular maintenance helps ensure that the system is ready to operate in the event of a fire.
